The Name
Skunkworks Projects • projects developed by a small group of people who research and develop a plan typically in total or semi-secrecy, primarily for the sake of radical innovation. The term originated with Lockheed's Advanced Development Programs (ADP) during World War II.
Expectations for skunkworks products have changed in the 21st century from something that makes competitors say, "Wow," to something that makes competitors' customers say, "Wow." — The Economist
Other famous skunkworks teams include Google X Lab, Ford and Shelby American's 1960s GT40 racing initiative, and the lab of about 50 people established by Steve Jobs to develop the Macintosh computer.
